The South African Weather Service (SAWS) announced on February 23 that its aviation website is back online following a cyber-attack four weeks ago.
The attack on January 26 compromised information and communication technology systems and disrupted aviation weather observations and forecasts. The service was unable to provide aviation weather updates with limited forecasts posted via social media platform X, Travel News reported.
The SAWS advised that limited services are available and will be fully restored in due course.
Some critical services, including internationally significant weather, including wind, charts and domestic and international flight documentation, research products and radar images are back online. Other services are still being tested.
Meanwhile, the SAWS aviation weather centre at OR Tambo International Airport continues to use alternative methods to share regular aeronautical weather information and updates.
