Thailand's Tourism and Sports Minister, Sorawong Thienthong, has announced plans to reduce visa-free stays from 60 to 30 days to address illegal business activities.
The proposal has gained support from multiple ministries, though a formal decision will be made once the details are finalised, according to Thai media reports.
The Association of Thai Travel Agents has reported a rise in foreigners working or conducting businesses illegally, while the Thai Hotels Association flagged a rise in condos being illegally rented out.
Since July 2024, Thailand has allowed passport holders from 93 countries, including South Africa, to enter for tourism purposes without a visa for up to 60 days.
