Animals Lebanon, an animal rescue organisation that rehabilitates abandoned animals and pets, has rescued a four-month-old lioness (allegedly after a court order was served on a wealthy individual) and has sent the cub to the Drakenstein Lion Park sanctuary in Cape Town.
The lioness, Sara, is suspected to have been born in an illegal zoo breeding scheme. According to Animals Lebanon, these schemes sell exotic animals to affluent Lebanese who use them for clout and to improve their social media following.
She was found with multiple wounds and severe ringworm. Following two months of rehabilitation and strategic waiting, the organisation was able to sneak her out of the country on a yacht. Following a 30-hour transit, she arrived in Cape Town on a flight on November 15.
