FOLLOWING the announcement that SAA’s ceo, Vuyani Jarana, had resigned, the National Union of Metalworkers and the South African Cabin Crew Association called on government to reject the resignation. In a joint statement, the unions accused government
of refusing to fund a turnaround strategy for the airline. “Under these circumstances, Numsa and Sacca are calling an urgent meeting with the president of the country as we reject and refuse the resignation of Jarana and demand that he be reinstated with immediate effect."
The trade unions have stated that they have not ruled out industrial action as a means of showing their dissatisfaction. Vuyani will work a threemonth notice period, ending August 31. The airline has said it will begin the process of searching for a new ceo immediately.
