Travel Insurance Consultants (TIC) no longer offers cancellation cover for epidemics, pandemics or health emergencies “declared or classified as such by WHO or any local or global government authority”.
The insurer announced yesterday that, with effect July 1, the sale of any new policy would exclude these claims under its cancellation, curtailment, and extension section (‘Cancellation’) of its policies.
“It is expected that COVID-19 will remain with us for some time, with the possibility of a resurgence. This makes anticipating the restart of international travel and the ability of airlines to perform quite unpredictable,” says Jason Veitch, head of travel insurance.
“To date, TIC has registered and paid out countless claims worth millions of rands, with more being registered every day,” he says.
Although TIC is changing its policy terms relating to the cancellation section, it has not amended the medical section of the policy. “All policyholders are still covered under the emergency medical and related expenses section for COVID-19 related medical claims,” says Jason.
