Centre Pompidou, the third-most-visited cultural site in Paris, will close for five years for renovations between 2025 and 2030, according to CNN Travel.
The centre offers one of the best views of Paris and attracts millions of visitors each year. Its inside-out construction with a ground-breaking exterior of pipes and conduits, galleries, library and restaurant will be undergoing repairs and construction work.
France’s Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul Malak, said the estimated €260 million (R5,3billion) modernisation and asbestos removal project would perpetuate its survival.
The renovation will include a new 1 500 sqm terrace with vistas over the west of the city. Work will also help reduce the centre’s energy bill by 60%. “We are probably one of the most energy-consuming buildings in France, so this is rather good news,” said the centre’s President, Laurent Le Bon.
In the meantime, the books of its public library will move to a temporary site In Paris’s Bercy district, and the artworks from its National Modern Art Museum will be exhibited across Paris, France and abroad.
