MORE South African are
going on safari and
bush trips.
“We noticed that the 70/30
split between international
and domestic travellers has
balanced out to a 50/50
split,” Hanelie Lombard, gm
of Makalali Private Game
Lodge in Hoedspruit, told
TNW on a recent media trip.
Hanelie attributes this
increase to the work of
companies like BushBreaks
& More.
BushBreaks & More is an
SA-based online operator that
specialises in aggregating
luxury safari and bush
experiences at discounted
rates for South African
citizens. It works with other
tour operators to market
distressed inventory to South
Africans at a lower rate.
Sales and marketing
manager, Kishani Govender,
says South Africans are
known to book bush and
safaris trips at short notice.
This is why the business
model of offering last-minute
bookings packages at 20% to
70% off the normal rate has
worked so well, she says.
Lodges that are four hours
or less from Johannesburg
are also popular with the
local market because they
are generally more affordable
and aren’t difficult or costly
to get to, says Kishani.
