The summer cyclone season in Mauritius ends on May 15 this year and contingency plans have been put in place well ahead of time to protect travellers.
Mauritius Meteorological Services forecasts eight to ten storms in the southwest Indian Ocean basin for the 2019-2020 summer season, from November 1, 2019 to May 15, 2020.
The MMS says not all named storms will necessarily be a direct threat to the islands of the Republic of Mauritius.
Airlines and travel agencies have put measures in place to keep their customers safe and informed for this year’s cyclone season.
British Airways (operated by Comair) operates one flight a week to Mauritius. A spokesperson from the airline says all operations continue as normal at this stage.
The airline will maintain constant contact with the destination and monitor weather forecasts as well as real-time updates. “We do not compromise on safety. Customers will be informed should there be any changes to the schedule.”
Air Mauritius also told eTNW that all operations would continue as normal.
“Mauritius summertime is not only the peak tourist season but also the most likely time for cyclones to occur. As this is nothing new, Thompsons Holidays ground staff in Mauritius are well equipped to deal with the cyclones when they do hit,” says Celeste Muir, marketing manager of Thompsons Holidays.
“Added to this we have a 24/7 emergency number that clients can call for the latest update. We assist clients by communicating with the hotels and airlines when accommodation or flights need to be amended or postponed due to any delays caused by the cyclone,” she adds.
