The Lufthansa Group has begun its commercial integration with ITA Airways following the acquisition of a 41% stake in the Italian carrier last month, as reported by Travel News.
Frequent flyer programmes
Effective immediately, both airlines’ frequent flyer programme members will enjoy expanded mileage benefits.
Members of Lufthansa’s Miles & More programme can now earn and redeem miles on ITA Airways flights, and members of ITA Airways’ Volare programme can do the same across Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines.
Terminal relocation
Starting March 30, ITA Airways will relocate its operations to Lufthansa’s terminals at two major German hubs – Terminal 1 at Frankfurt Airport and Terminal 2 at Munich Airport. The move aims to streamline passenger transfers and reduce connection times.
Expanded lounge access
From March 30, ITA Airways passengers will gain access to approximately 130 Lufthansa Group lounges worldwide, while Lufthansa Group passengers will be able to use ITA Airways lounges in Italy and other key locations.
Codesharing
A significant milestone in the integration process will be the launch of over 100 codeshared routes from the start of the European summer flight schedule.
ITA Airways flights will be incorporated into Lufthansa Group’s network, allowing seamless booking and increased travel options for customers.
Passengers flying within Italy will also gain better connectivity to Lufthansa’s extensive global destinations, while Lufthansa Group travellers will benefit from enhanced access to ITA Airways’ domestic routes, including Sicily, Sardinia, Calabria and Puglia.
All codeshare connections can be booked from February 25.
Additionally, flight schedules between key hubs – Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels, Rome and Milan – will be optimised to provide travellers with greater flexibility and improved connection times.
ITA to join Star Alliance
Another major shift will be ITA Airways’ transition from SkyTeam to Star Alliance. The airline has already initiated the process of withdrawing from its former alliance, with full accession to Star Alliance planned for the first half of 2026.
Once the move is completed, ITA Airways passengers will enjoy Star Alliance benefits, including global lounge access, priority services, and enhanced connectivity.
