Kate Nathan will take over as editor of Travel News at the beginning of August.
She takes the reins from Natasha Schmidt, who has resigned from the company to pursue a new career in her family’s art framing business.
Natasha joined the company in 2007 after completing a degree in journalism and Honours degree in English. She started as a researcher, writing travel alerts for Travelinfo. A few months later she moved to Travel News Weekly as a journalist, working her way up steadily to editor and then publisher. Last year she was appointed executive director responsible for the content of some six titles within the Now Media group.
“As a young journalist, fresh out of university, it was my aim to find any publishing company that would be willing to take me on and give me work experience. I couldn’t have imagined, back then, how much more I stood to gain. Now Media has afforded me so many wonderful opportunities, not only in publishing but in travel, an industry I have grown to love,” says Natasha.
“Over the past 13 years, I have had the privilege of learning from and working side-by-side with Kate, a maven in the industry. There is no one better to take over Travel News.”
Kate joined Now Media in 1998. She has held various senior positions within the company, including serving as editor of TNW for a time. Her diverse experience includes management roles in content, publishing and sales. Supporting her are experienced freelance journalists Sarah Robertson and Hilka Birns, and our inhouse journalists Michelle Ramiah and Amogela Modise.
“From the company’s point of view I am truly sad to see Natasha moving on, she has been a real support and a company success story. However, it is also very gratifying seeing her take on new challenges and know that Now Media has played a part in developing and encouraging her business acumen,” says Anton Marsh, md of Now Media.
“In Kate Nathan we are fortunate to have a strong replacement, with a good team supporting her. I have every confidence that Travel News is in great hands with a person who is passionate about the travel industry.”
