Indonesia is planning to build a light rail transit (LRT) system in Bali next year to prevent road congestion around the airport.
Bali attracts millions of foreign travellers every year and depends heavily on tourism, however the island’s narrow roads have been clogged with traffic jams since reopening after the pandemic, according to gulfnews.com.
The LRT system will be built underground and connect the island’s international airport to popular tourist areas like Canggu and Seminyak , which will help to control tourism traffic.
The airport is expected to receive 24 million visitors in 2025 and the same in 2026, and government officials fear that, without the light rail system, airport-users could be delayed for three hours at the airport.
The project has attracted investment interest from Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing.
