AmaWaterways will soon become the first major cruise line to offer cruises on the Magdalena River, Colombia, when it launches two new ships next year.
AmaMagdalena, which is launching on March 30, 2024, will accommodate up to 60 travellers, while AmaMelodia, which will begin sailing from June 19, 2024, will be able to accommodate up to 64 travellers.
The staterooms will be between 22 sqm and 48 sqm and will feature the cruise line’s signature twin balcony design. The ships will also field sun deck pools, spas, and fitness rooms.
Prices for seven-night cruises start at US$3 599 (R66 687) per person, based on double occupancy.
Travellers will have the choice of two seven-night itineraries, Magic of Colombia and Wonders of Colombia.
Sailing between Cartagena and Barranquilla, the two itineraries include unusual highlights, such as:
- A special carnival celebration in Barranquilla, featuring live performances reserved exclusively for AmaWaterways guests.
- Historical walking tours in destinations such as Mompox (a Unesco site where travellers will be welcomed by an exclusive jazz performance).
- Birdwatching tours with more than 1 900 bird species to be seen, including the Cianeguo hummingbirds and the Chauna chavaria, found only in the Colombia region.
- Visits to Palenque, where guests will enjoy a Freedom Historical tour, as well as dancing to musical styles such as cumbia and vallenato, indigenous Colombian dance styles, during the Drum Rhythms tour.
- Seeing the Magdalena basin, home to many unique species of flora and fauna.
Travellers will also have the opportunity to extend their journeys with optional pre-cruise land packages in Medellín and Cartagena, and a post-cruise land package in Panama City.
