Avianca Brasil files for bankruptcy protection
AVIANCA Brasil, Brazil’s fourth-largest airline, filed for bankruptcy
protection on December 10, according to Brazilian newspaper, O
Estado de S. Paulo.
If granted, bankruptcy protection places a legal limit on the amount
of money a bankrupt company must pay to those it owes. The
airline’s SA-based general sales agent, APG GSSA, told TNW that,
to its knowledge, all operations and flights were still operating as
normal.
TAP eyes return to South Africa
AFTER an absence of more than 10 years, TAP Air Portugal may
return to the South African market. According to the Portuguese
press, during a recent tourism conference in Lisbon, airline board
chairperson, Miguel Frasquilho, said the carrier had plans to return
to South Africa.
However, when TNW contacted the airline’s local representation, they
advised that new aircraft would only be acquired this year and any
potential re-entry into the South African market would not be before
the end of the year, or 2020.
Air Botswana resumes CPT-GBE flights
AIR Botswana has resumed direct Gaborone-Cape Town flights on
Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Flights were suspended by the
South African Civil Aviation Authority in February 2018 due to a
lease agreement that the airline had with CemAir for the aircraft
that operated the route.
Air Botswana did not renew its agreement with CemAir and instead
procured a new ATR72-600.
