As the world ushered in the New Year on January 1, border authorities between Romania and Hungary celebrated Romania’s official welcome into the Schengen zone.
While waiting for the first traveller to cross this border, a stray dog, oblivious to the political significance of the occasion, became the inaugural traveller to the now-open border. Border authorities cheered and clapped to welcome the canine traveller and to mark the end of strict border controls between the two countries.
