Mielie, a companion sheep at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, recently won an afternoon race back to the boma, beating another lamb and a small crash of rhinos.
The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre posted a video of Mielie, a beloved companion to rhino orphans, leading the group back to the boma.
The video indicates the special role sheep play in helping the young animals socialise. Sheep are excellent companions animals for orphaned wildlife, providing a sense of security for animals that have been through trauma. The duos nap together in bomas, go on walks, share meals and grow up together, according to Good Things Guy.
Mielie joined the centre in 2018 as a young lamb and was quickly introduced to Esmé the rhino as a companion. Seven years later and the two are still the best of friends.
