BagPortr has launched an off-site ‘bag drop’ service for passengers flying on KLM and Air France from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International.
The service, the first of its kind in South Africa, means that passengers no longer have to drop their baggage at the check-in counter.
“The service was launched with KLM and Air France on January 20,” says Juan van Rensburg, md of BagPortr.
BagPortr will collect the luggage of KLM and Air France passengers from their home, hotel or any preferred point of collection within a 60km radius of the airport, before delivering it to OR Tambo International for loading on to the traveller’s flight.
Passengers pay a fee of R350 per bag after completing an online check-in process. Luggage is then collected, security sealed, and transported under strict security conditions up to four hours prior to their departure.
The product was initially set to launch in the second quarter of 2019, but Juan says delays were caused by the time it took building the technology for the service, adapting it to the airline specifications and all the approvals from the relevant authorities.
BagPortr is currently in talks with a number of carriers, travel agencies and inbound tour operators interested in offering the baggage collection service to their clients.
