MORNING and afternoon
ticket slots to visit Peru’s
Machu Picchu ruins have
been discontinued and
replaced with tickets
reflecting hourly entrance
slots.
This has been introduced
in an effort to contain overtourism in the region.
Guests can now purchase
tickets allowing hourly
entrance to the site, which
are available for slots from
06h00 until 14h00 daily.
Only a limited number of
tickets are available
for each hour.
“The new hourly system
only affects the time
tourists enter the site,
not how long they stay,”
explained Jane Davidson,
director of Development
Promotions.
“Overcrowding at
bucket-list destinations
like Machu Picchu is a
concern. Changing to hourly
tickets might be effective
in controlling the masses,
minimising the footprint
in the area, and also
preserving the environment,”
added Marelize Le Roux,
Travel Vision gm.
