United Airlines has launched the United Military Pilot Program to give full-time, active-duty US military pilots access to conditional job offers as First Officers.
The programme comes at a time when several US airlines are struggling with pilot shortages. United is now recruiting certified pilots and crew members to take advantage of the strong demand for international travel post-pandemic, reports reuters.com.
The programme aims to provide secure job opportunities for military participants while they complete their service and work towards meeting United’s hiring requirements. Successful applicants must take part in an interview and complete flight training and certification before joining the airline.
Candidates do not need to hold an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate (ATP) to apply, however they will need to have obtained their ATP before joining United. Current or former military pilots who meet these requirements can apply for a First Officer position.
Currently, United has over 16 000 pilots, including over 3 000 who have served or currently serve in the US Armed Forces. The airline employs nearly 7 700 military veterans and 1 500 actively serving personnel across various departments and functions, including many serving in leadership and executive positions.
