Travel with purpose in the winelands

The Western Cape wineland towns of Paarl and Wellington offer travellers the opportunity to travel ‘with a conscience’, according to the Drakenstein Local Tourism Association.

In a statement, the association recognised a post-COVID-19 trend of travellers being more conscientious about how they travelled and wanting to have a positive impact on their host destinations. “The pandemic has made us look at our lives in very, very different ways,” it said.

The wineland towns were small and community-driven, said the statement, with many of the wineries, restaurants, accommodation and attractions operating with reduced environmental footprints. “They promote conservation and protection of local nature and wildlife, and they engage with the local community in a respectful, positive and mutually beneficial way.”

It also highlighted that the towns were not heavily congested, making it easy to maintain social distancing when visiting. There are also many outdoor attractions and experiences in the reserves and on wine estates.

The destinations have also received the World Travel & Tourism Council’s ‘safe travels’ approval, and adhere to strict health and safety protocols.
