Sri Lanka has announced that the e-Visa system has been suspended after only four months. Travellers must now obtain visas on arrival.
The decision to suspend the electronic visa system is allegedly connected to controversy – the local tourism industry accuses the Sri Lankan government of corruption around the visa scheme, reports Visaguide.News.
Business visas have been suspended indefinitely but tourist visas can be issued on arrival for up to 30 days.
The government adopted the electronic visa system in April, as reported by Travel News and, at the time, the price of the visa was increased by 50%.
The system was operated by VFS Global and IVS-GBS and was intended to simplify the visa process.
