The new Sky Line people mover was unveiled at Frankfurt Airport on November 3.
It will carry travellers between the airport’s terminals. Both the new Terminal 3 and the driverless transportation system will become operational in 2026.
The new Sky Line will supplement the existing people mover system at Frankfurt Airport. The challenge is that two runways separate the new terminal from the rest of the airport.
The new Sky Line people mover will be able to carry up to 4 000 passengers per hour in each direction between Terminals 1, 2, and 3. The trip between Terminals 1 and 3 will take eight minutes, travelling at speeds of up to 80 km/h. The existing Sky Line will continue to operate between Terminals 1 and 2 but only carry passengers who are transferring between flights.
Fraport AG CEO, Dr Stefan Schulte said: “We are deploying state-of-the-art technology and intelligent construction methods to implement our vision of a futuristic airport terminal. Travellers, guests and employees can all look forward to short paths, high frequencies and outstanding levels of comfort and convenience.”
The Max Bögl group is responsible for building most of the new, 5,6 km-long route on which the new Sky Line will operate, for which work has been ongoing since July 2019.
