FROM this month, technical
standards for monitoring
aircraft emission under
CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting
and Reduction Scheme for
International Aviation) now
apply to all Icao member
states. Seventy-six states have
volunteered for the programme
with Iata hoping that it will
become mandatory by 2027.
South Africa is currently not a
participant.
The scheme measures
carbon emissions and airlines
can choose to either reduce
emissions or pay for them.
While there is a lot of talk
from governments about
implementing green taxes
to offset emissions, Iata
believes CORSIA will have a
more positive environmental
impact, as airlines will need
to transparently report on the
certified projects they have
invested in. Iata says no one
really knows where the money
collected through various taxes
ultimately ends up.
