Mount Fuji will require prospective hikers to take a test on safety and local rules during the climbing season from July to September.
Shizuoka prefecture, the starting point for three of four Mount Fuji trails, will require hikers to take a brief class about hiking safety and rules. Afterwards, they will have to pass a short test to confirm they understood the information, reports CNN.
This measure ensures hikers are properly equipped to handle the trails as some climbers often need medical attention due to wearing inappropriate gear and not bringing proper equipment or enough water.
This follows the introduction of an entry fee that is also in place from July to September.
