Mauritius has reported no new active cases of COVID-19 for 20 consecutive days as of Sunday, May 17.
The Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) credits the responsiveness of Mauritian authorities and the effectiveness of the island’s health system, which it says is well-seasoned in dealing with epidemics such as malaria or Dengue fever, for bringing the virus under control.
It says tests are ongoing and vigilance has not been relaxed.
The COVID-19 curfew order, which was implemented on March 23, has been extended to June 1.
The MTPA told Travel News that Mauritius was very much open for business. Airlines and tour operators continued to take holiday bookings in anticipation of the lifting of the lockdown travel restrictions, the authority said.
“We know the skies will open up again and that those travellers who have come to know and love Mauritius – and those who plan to visit for the first time – will get the opportunity to experience the island’s amazing warmth and hospitality. Mauritius and South Africa have long enjoyed a magical relationship and we are confident this will continue as soon as it is safe to travel again,” said Arvind Bundhun, director of MTPA.
