LUX has opened its flagship resort in Zanzibar and made its debut in East Africa with LUX Marijani – a five-star beachfront resort at Pwani Mchangani on the northeast coast of the main island.
While Zanzibar has attracted several other international players in recent months, Carlos Luis from TLC Vacations, which represents The LUX Collective in the South African market, believes the brand is unmatched by other accommodation options.
“LUX Marijani offers the same experiences as you would at any other LUX* resort with the same reasons to go. Guests who have experienced other LUX resorts before would enjoy the same level of sophistication at our resort in Zanzibar.”
The boutique resort, which offers 82 rooms and suites, is inspired by the spice island’s past and features Arab architecture with Swahili details in a mixture of African and Arabic styles. The resort has a spa and a fitness centre and offers unique island activities such as the Japanese practice of forest bathing and sandbank yoga.
The LUX Grand Suites, the most luxurious accommodation option in the property, feature outdoor showers and private beach-facing swimming pools. The property has two conference rooms and two large meeting rooms, catering for up to 50 people in total.
A variety of dining options include two restaurants, a café, a bar, and an ice-cream parlour. The alfresco dinner venue, Samaa, will open in the near future.
The resort was 18 months old and privately owned before being taken on by LUX.
“They saw and appreciated our properties in Mauritius and liked the concept of what we had done there, so they asked us to manage their resort,” says Luis.
The brand’s Mauritius portfolio comprises four of the global LUX portfolio of 24 hotels.
