TO CELEBRATE 100 years of
aviation, KLM has launched
a dedicated website, www.
klm100.com, which is
counting down to October 7,
the airline’s birthday.
The website features an
illustrated history of the
airline, which was launched
in October 1919. It also
gives visitors the chance
to learn more about KLM
through a variety of stories,
including a spotlight on its
on-board menu in 1965, the
airline’s first stewards and
stewardesses, and Hans
Murris who has worked on
every KLM livery for the last
three decades.
Of interest is the story
about KLM’s famous Delft
houses. “KLM raised
eyebrows when it began
serving Dutch gin in
special miniature houses
to World Business Class
passengers,” the story
goes. It was frowned on
to give out gifts, as this
could be seen as unfair
competition. But, technically
speaking, this wasn’t a gift.
“Is there a law that tells us
drinks have to be served
in a glass?” KLM asked its
critics at the time.
Eight of the miniature
houses are the most sought
after, including Rembrandt
House (no. 48), Anne Frank
House (no. 47) and The
Weighing House, which was
given to bridal couples flying
on KLM between 1995 and
2005.
