Global our operator Intrepid Travel will start its first-ever trips to the Comoros Islands, situated at the northern tip of the Mozambique Channel, from August.
The nine-day 'Comoros Wildlife Expedition' will depart from the capital Moroni before travelling to Itsamia and Mwali, a Unesco Biosphere Reserve that is home to the second-highest marine diversity in the world. The region is also home to many unique and rare endemic wildlife species.
The trip also includes interactions with the local people and conservationists working to protect the islands’ biodiversity.
The Comoros expedition is one of 16 new wildlife trips and experiences Intrepid is launching in 2023. Notable additions include a visit to the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust on the operator’s Vic Falls to Kruger tour, giving travellers a rare glimpse into wildlife crime investigations while supporting critical anti-poaching efforts.
For the first time, Intrepid is also bringing travellers to a gorilla naming ceremony in Rwanda on the nine-day Gorilla Naming Ceremony & Uganda tour. Intrepid will also be working with local Zambian artists who are turning poachers’ snare wire into jewellery as part of their ‘Beauty from Brutality’ mission, which travellers will now support through a workshop on the Stone Town to Vic Falls tour.
Intrepid has reviewed and refreshed all 140-plus existing wildlife tours to include more opportunities for travellers to get closer to nature and ensure the company maximises its positive impact on the communities and environment.
