Unesco has declared the French city of Nice a new addition to its World Heritage List, recognising and honouring the “exceptional universal value” of the city's rich heritage and the originality of its history.
“The history of Nice, both deep-rooted and open, Mediterranean and Alpine, European and cosmopolitan, has produced a unique architecture and landscape: a model for many other cities in the world,” says Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice.
A location must meet at least one of ten criteria to be recognised as a World Heritage Site. Some of the conditions are: representing a masterpiece of human creative genius, containing natural phenomena or exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance, bearing a unique or exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition or civilisation, and exhibiting an important interchange of human values.
