Egypt is due to open the new Sphinx International Airport this year. The new airport is located near the Giza Pyramids and is set to operate both domestic and international flights.
According to the Egyptian Gazette, Civil Aviation Minister, Mohamed Manar, noted during a cabinet meeting on May 18, that 90% of the development process had been completed and that the airport should begin operating from mid-July.
According to The National, the airport originally opened for a trial period in 2018 for mostly domestic flights, it has since undergone major works to transform it into an international airport. The airport’s size has been increased to 24 000 sqm and it will have capacity to process 900 passengers an hour, once completed.
Construction of the airport is part of a plan to improve accessibility for travellers to historical sites, to relieve the pressure currently placed on Cairo International Airport, and to create links with popular Red Sea Resorts, reports IOL.
Prime Minister, Moustafa Madbouli, highlighted the state’s interest in developing the Civil Aviation sector during the cabinet meeting. He noted that the project is of great importance, especially due to the airports proximity to the Giza Pyramids Plateau.
It will offer travellers to Egypt the advantage of arriving just minutes away from the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, reports Egyptian Streets. It is substantially closer for travellers than if they had flown into Cairo International Airport.
