Asata has reacted to the Priority Escapes’ debacle (the sudden closure on August 12, which left consumers seriously out of pocket after they paid for Maldives holidays) sending out a message to consumers to deal only with reputable agents.
Otto de Vries, Asata CEO, has issued a release saying that the situation underlines the importance of selecting a reliable travel agent, pointing out that Priority Escapes was not among its members.
Although the travel industry in South Africa is not regulated, Asata acts as a ‘semi-regulator’, ensuring travellers connect with reputable professionals.
Asata says its accredited agents offer consumers:
1.Professionalism and a rigorous standard of conduct.
2. Financial security – Asata agencies consistently demonstrate sound financial practices.
3.Up-to-date expertise – continuous training ensures Asata agents stay up to date.
4.Ethical operations – agencies are committed to transparency, honesty, and integrity.
5.Customer advocacy – agencies prioritise travellers' needs, pledging to address and resolve any arising issues.
6.Code of conduct – members need to abide by a strict code of conduct, constitution and the Asata charter.
"Committing significant funds for holidays means consumers need assurance. The challenge lies in discerning credible travel companies from the many.
“Asata members ensure that the suppliers and operators they use are vetted, affording customers peace of mind that they’re placing their trust and hard-earned money in the hands of credible industry professionals," said De Vries.
He further stressed: "A holiday is more than just a trip; it's an investment of dreams, emotions, and resources. Every Asata member understands this deeply, ensuring that customers are reassured from the start that they are dealing with a reliable and reputable travel partner.”
Asata says it stands firm in its dedication to uphold professionalism and trustworthiness in the travel sector and travellers are encouraged to align with agencies that mirror these values.
