Techo Takhmao International Airport in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, is set to be the ninth largest airport in the world.
The US$1,2bn (R21bn) airport will handle up to 15m passengers annually by the end of the first phase of construction. Phase one will also include the construction of multiple runways, each over three kilometres in length, and one passenger terminal, reports Airport Technology.
In phase two, a second wing to the terminal will be added, with capacity for 30m passengers per annum. Phase three will see the airport grow to accommodate 50m passengers per year by 2050.
This will put the airport in competition with neighbouring Vietnam’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, which can also handle 50 million passengers yearly.
The airport is expected to be operational by mid-2025.
Techo Takhmao was designed so that the canopy resembles the jungles of Cambodia. The ceiling canopy of patterned steel is held up by columns resembling tree trucks, and greenery and water features will be incorporated into the interior, courtyard and parking lot.
