British royalty opens up

The UK will open previously restricted areas of two royal properties to tourists this year during the coming summer.

The British monarchy announced that restricted areas in Buckingham Palace would be open to the public for the first time. The East Wing of the palace, famous for the balcony where the royal family stands for public gatherings, will open for guided tours in July and August.

Tickets for the East Wing must be bought alongside a ticket to visit the state rooms. This will cost visitors £75 (R1 766).

In addition, Balmoral Castle, the royal residence in Scotland, will open to tourists for the first time. While previous tours focused on the gardens with little to no access to the palace's interior, guided tours of the rooms will now be offered from the beginning of July until August 4.

Tickets for Balmoral are limited to 40 per day and will cost £100 (R2 355) or £150 (R3 532) (guided tour with afternoon tea).
