&Beyond Mnemba Island, northeast of Zanzibar mainland, has recently reopened following an extensive refurbishment.
The upgrade was carried out by long-time collaborators Fox Browne Creative and Nicholas Plewman Architects. Included in the project was a redesign of the beachfront bandas (traditional Swahili-style bungalows) to each include a private beach lounge and an additional entrance that leads straight to the beach. One of the bandas was also converted into a two-bedroom family unit.
The lodge's main area was completely rebuilt, with an indoor area, outdoor area and a bar in the centre. The new design allows for space to socialise and more secluded corners for privacy. The dining space offers an open-air experience but can also be enclosed in the event of inclement weather.
The island has a new beach shop and a discovery centre dedicated to community and conservation initiatives. The dive centre has been renovated and expanded to offer guests equipment and facilities for stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking and sailing.
