There has been a rise in the global travel and tourism industry of travel companies hiring employees for new roles in travel sustainability.
GlobalData, an analytics company, uncovered the trend based on data from its Job Analytics Database, which recorded new job postings for environmental, social, and governance-related (ESG) roles at airline, airport and hospitality companies.
In its latest Sustainable Travel Report, Booking.com revealed that 76% of travellers want to make their trips more sustainable, and the surge in sustainable job postings within travel comes at a time when the industry has seen a growing demand for more sustainable offerings.
“The ESG-related hiring is likely to increase as companies build internal resources to manage compliance with new reporting standards, decarbonise their operations and supply chains, and develop low-carbon products and services,” said Sherla Sriprada, Business Fundamentals Analyst at GlobalData.
As an example, GlobalData mentioned Ryanair’s job posting for a sustainability manager who would need to monitor fuel usage and CO₂ emissions for compliance reporting and identify the best strategies to reduce carbon intensity.
Air Canada was also found to be recruiting for a sustainable procurement managerial role, while United Airlines, Southwest and WestJet are all looking for a suitable candidates for senior roles in sustainability and sustainable fuels management.
The trend also extends to the hospitality market, with InterContinental Hotels Group looking for a director of engineering, decarbonisation and operational support.
“As the industry navigates the complexities of decarbonisation and environmental stewardship, the expertise and leadership provided by these roles will be essential in driving meaningful change and fostering a more sustainable future for travel,” said Sriprada
