OPERATING IN remote areas such as Namibia, the Kalahari and parts of Botswana can prove a communication nightmare for safari vehicles, which is why Pretoria-based Penduka Safaris has fitted nine of its vehicles operating in Botswana with VHF radio sets.
"The radio sets allows the vehicles not only to communicate with each other, but to stay in constant communication with the base camp in Maun," relates Penduka's marketing manager, Leander Borg.
The 'bush telegraph system' works through repeater towers strategically placed to allow for communication in and around Maun, Moremi, Chobe, eastern Delta and Nxai pan while vehicles travelling to the more remote areas in places such as Namibia are fitted with high frequency (HF) radio sets.
