Two of Spain’s largest airports launched a free virtual queuing service for airport security on February 13, saving passengers as much as 30 minutes of queuing time.
Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport and Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport have opened exclusive lanes for passengers who have reserved time slots on the new queuing app to go through security.
Reservations can be made as early as a week before a flight, up until 90 minutes before departure. The service is available for passengers departing from Terminal 1 at Barcelona and Terminal 3 at Malaga.
The airports are using the platform RESERVE from the secure identity company CLEAR. CLEAR offers free queuing services from 22 other locations – eight in Europe and the rest in the US and Canada.
Heathrow Airport began trialling a similar service, ‘Heathrow Timeslot’ in October last year.
A report from market researcher Visiongain released last week revealed that this was part of a larger trend where airports were employing more smart technologies to improve efficiency and resource management.
According to the report, the global smart airport technologies market is projected to have a compound annual growth rate of 13,8% in the next 10 years.
