African art museum opens in Cape Town
NORVAL Foundation, an
African art museum
and cultural centre
(pictured), opened in Cape
Town last month.
It showcases contemporary
African art, with the aim
of making it accessible
to the public. The cultural
centre promotes nature
conservation and has a
children’s educational
programme.
The Norval Foundation has
nine galleries; a large atrium
that will display an annual
special commission; and
an amphitheatre that seats
250 people. Other features
include a research library,
sculpture garden, children’s
playground restaurant and
bar.
The debut exhibition, Pulling
at Threads, runs until August
20. Adults pay R140, under-
18s are free. Free tours are
available Monday-Friday from
14h00, and on weekends and
public holidays from 11h00.
Culinary tour offers ‘lekker’ cuisine
ROAR Africa will launch its
Flavours of a Rainbow Nation
experience in October.
Based in Cape Town, the
tour will act as a guide
to the city’s best food
markets, artisanal stores,
delicatessens, restaurants,
cafés, cocktail bars and
breweries. The venues
will showcase food that is
uniquely South African.
The tour will start in the
city centre, with day two
closing atop Table Mountain.
The tour will then depart
for the Cape Winelands,
visiting a historic vineyard
with accommodation at
a farm-stay hotel, before
culminating in a trip to the
Kruger National Park with
accommodation at Singita’s
Sweni Lodge.
Kirkwood Wildsfees returns
THE Spar Kirkwood
Wildsfees returns to the
Eastern Cape from
June 29 to July 1.
The festival features
more than 30 of South
Africa’s local artists, and
350 specialist stalls.
Children’s activities
include a Santa’s Secret
Workshop, themed Wild
West pony rides, pedal
go-karts, paintball and
a chance to meet and
greet popular cartoon
characters.
For the first time,
Capitec’s sponsorship
has provided festival
goers with the ability to
pay for their entrance
tickets with their credit
or debit cards. Gates
open at 09h00 every
day and are open ‘until
late’.
Mountain biking introduced in Maseke Reserve
MASEKE Mountain Biking
offers morning and
afternoon mountain biking
trails in the Maseke Game
Reserve, which shares an
open boundary with the
Kruger National Park.
The reserve is north
of Hoedspruit towards
Phalaborwa, and the new
activity is available to
lodges and visitors in the
area. Rides take two to
three hours, with prices
starting at R550 per
person.
New W Cape cycle tour
A NEW cycle route was
launched on May 13 in
the Western Cape by the
Minister of Economic
Opportunities, Alan Winde.
The route has been named
Cycle Tour 364 as cyclists
can participate in it 364
days of the year.
The remaining day is
reserved for riders of the
Cape Town Cycle Tour.
The 123km route
starts and ends at the
V&A Waterfront in Cape
Town, taking in the
Atlantic Seaboard, Hout
Bay, Chapman’s Peak,
Suikerbossie Hill, and
Simon’s Town, and goes
past Masiphumelele, as well
as Ocean View.
