The Sustainable Seychelles Certification Programme launched by the archipelago’s Department of Tourism, has extended its programme to include restaurants and tour operators in addition to hotels.
The expansion of the programme aims to further embed sustainability practices in the local tourism sector, according to the Department. Seychelles tourism recently presented the expansion to its partners.
Paul Lebon, Director General for Destination Planning and Development at the Tourism Department, explained that this is a voluntary programme to recognise and promote sustainable practices across the industry.
The programme helps organisations reduce operational costs through efficient resource management while also attracting sustainability-minded travellers.
In order to qualify for the certification, restaurants and tour operators must meet 24 criteria to show that they are committed to sustainable business practices. This is a set of standards focusing on management, waste, water, energy, staff, conservation, community and guests.
All licenced tourism accommodation, restaurants and tour operators are eligible to participate in the programme. The certification is valid for two years from the date of issue and businesses will be subject to reassessment.
“We are very pleased to extend the benefits of the Sustainable Seychelles Certification Programme beyond accommodations to include restaurants and tour operators. Today marks the beginning of their journey. We have presented the project and expect them to review and engage with us. It took many years to establish this programme with our accommodation partners, and now that it is gaining momentum, we want it to take other dimensions,” said Sherin Francis, Principal Secretary for Tourism in the Seychelles.
