New SAA ceo, Vuyani
Jarana, is likely to cut staff at the carrier through a combination of
layoffs and voluntary redundancies, according to a Business Day report.
"SAA cannot carry the same workforce, whether it is pilots,
cabin crew or administration," he was quoted as saying.
The carrier is expected to cut between 1 000 and 1 500
people, according to the report.
According to reports, the airline employs some 190 employees
per aircraft, compared to full service airlines in the USA, Europe and Asia
which employ between 120 and 140 employees per aircraft. The large staff
compliment at SAA has long been cited as one of the reason for the carrier’s
financial losses.
