LANSERIA International Airport
is spending R1bn over the next
five years on infrastructure
expansion to cater for a growth
plan that will see the airport
double its capacity to more
than five million passengers
by 2022, says ceo, Rampa
Rammopo.
Last year, Lanseria recorded
more than 2,4m passengers.
The airport plans to handle six
million passengers by 2027
and 18m by 2050.
Expansion of the main
terminal is scheduled for
completion by November.
Phase one of the project
includes a renovated check-in
area with five extra check-in
counters, two more boarding
gates, an additional baggage
carousel, another B737-800
parking bay and an extended
VVIP lounge.
The construction of a
R250m multi-storey car park
with 4 000 parking bays is
nearing completion and a
new tower and fire station
were opened in 2017.
Budget airlines Mango,
kulula.com and FlySafair
currently offer scheduled
services from Lanseria to
Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and
Zanzibar.
The Zanzibar service was
launched by Mango in June.
The airport is also talking to
Air Namibia, Kenya Airways, Air
Mauritius and Air Botswana in
line with its vision to become
a regional airport catering
for sub-Saharan Africa, says
Rampa.

Starting July 11, Mango will fly
twice daily between Lanseria
and Port Elizabeth.
Acting ceo, Marelize

network out of Lanseria.

fitted with winglet technology
to reduce fuel use.
