Japan is introducing new electronic gates, known as joint kiosks, at its major airports to reduce immigration and customs processing times.
Kansai Airport in Osaka and Terminal 2 of Haneda Airport in Tokyo launched the joint kiosks on April 1 and it launched at Narita Airport’s Terminal 3 on April 7. It will be available at Haneda’s Terminal 3 by April 11.
The kiosks will eliminate the need for multiple passport checks at immigration, saving approximately 20 minutes of waiting time.
Foreign passport holders can use the system after submitting their personal information through Visit Japan Web’s official website where they will receive a QR code. They will also have to provide fingerprints and facial photography to authorities when using the facilities.
Information must be submitted at least six hours before arrival.
