Hundreds of tourists have been evacuated from southern Portugal after a wildfire spread throughout the area, according to the mirror.co.uk.
Parts of Odemira in the Alentejo region were devastated as the fire, which started on Saturday August 5, spread south towards the Algarve. As a result, 1 400 people, both residents and tourists, were forced to evacuate four holiday resorts and 19 villages, as the fire consumed 6 700 hectares of land.
Several roads have been closed off, including parts of the A1 between Lisbon and Porto. The Portuguese weather agency has put six districts, including Lisbon, on red alert.
The fire is the result of a third heatwave to hit the Iberian peninsula. As Europe continues to be hit by wildfires, travel alerts have been issued for tourists planning trips to Spain, Greece and Italy.
