Grand Central Airport in Midrand is in the process of applying for an international airport licence and seeks to launch commercial operations within the next 18 months.
The airport is currently in discussions with Airlink but several limitations and issues still need to be resolved. Grand Central Airport Manager, Gary Renault, says: “We are busy trying to make sure that Airlink’s aircraft can safely depart and arrive within the current airspace.”
“In our discussions with Airlink, it was decided to start the service between Grand Central and Cape Town, and then within six months hopefully add a Durban route,” said Renault.
In terms of its international licence, Renault says all the necessary infrastructure is already in place to commence international operations. “All that remains to be done is some dry-wall remodelling within the terminal building, and this can happen within three weeks as plans are already in place.”
The international licence application is currently with the Department of Transport.
