Strike action at French airports, scheduled for June 9, has apparently already taken effect at some airports, with French press reporting delays caused by industrial action at Paris, Marseille, Nantes and Carcassonne, although on Wednesday, June 8, flights from these airports had not been cancelled.
The industrial action comes when airlines and airports across Europe are already unable to deal with high summer passenger volumes due to lack of personnel.
A quarter of all flights departing from Paris CDG and Paris Orly in the morning of Thursday, June 9 are cancelled – this was at the request of the French Civil Aviation Authority to prevent congestion due to delayed flights.
The disruptions are intended to last from 07h00 and 14h00 tomorrow on Thursday.
Unions are demanding pay rises of €300 (R4 919) to help employees to cope with inflation. They also want better working conditions.
Air France has stated that customers impacted by its adapted schedule will be informed directly and offered the opportunity to delay their journey if they wish.
The airline is also advising passengers to check in online to avoid long queues in the airport. Passengers are advised to check their flight status online before departing for the airport, and to arrive three hours before the flight.
