Two unique Namaqualand flower camps, Namaqua Flower Beach Camp (south of Hondeklip, on the northern reaches of the Cape West Coast) and Namaqua Flower Skilpad Camp (east of Hondeklip), which are open for only four weeks a year during the flower season, will soon open for their short season.
The camps are in the SANParks Namaqua National Park and the two facilities are run by Chief’s Tented Camps.
Flower season in the arid Northern Cape region means the normally dry, brown, stony earth undergoes a magnificent floral transformation. The seasonal winter rains over the West Coast and adjacent interior trigger the blooming of one of the most spectacular floral kingdoms in the world, a truly breath-taking phenomenon, unlike any other.
Bookings are open for stays from August 13 to September 12.
Both camps are easily accessible in vehicles with good ground clearance. Fifteen private en-suite tents are available at both Namaqua Flower Beach Camp at Groenriviermond, and Namaqua Flower Skilpad Camp.
The tents are comfortably furnished and have spectacular views from private verandahs. Fresh linen and duvets, electric blankets, generator-driven electricity, soft furnishings, hot showers and chemical loos all offer a home-away-from-home look and feel.
Guest facilities include a communal dining and lounge area with comfy chairs, cushions, knee blankets and cosy gas heaters. Coffee and rusks are served to each tent in the morning, then guests gather in the dining room for a wholesome breakfast. Dinners are prepared by celebrity Chefs Craig Cormack of Salt and Andrea Foulkes of Dish Food and Social. Afternoon teas are served too. The staff will also organise deli-style picnic baskets for guests to enjoy while they explore the flowers. Each flower camp also has a cash bar.
This is the world-renowned Namaqualand flower season, so obviously just experiencing the flower kingdom is a central activity. Ways to experience it all include beach and bush walks, trails, photography, 4x4 trails, star-gazing, bird watching, and much more. To book, contact pr@experiences.co.za or go to www.flowercamps.co.za
